Abstract

This article investigates the meta questions and contexts for professional ethics. It highlights the role of professional ethics, comments on the limitations of ethical codes, outlines the role of the changing work environment and its implications for a professional ethic. A framework for a professional ethic is suggested to deal with professional ethics in the workplace. After dealing with a conceptual framework for ethics and professional ethics it is proposed that a three-fold approach to ethics is best to concretise the normative love associacted with ethics. The three-fold approach is based on responsible acts, the making of decisions and a growth ethic to facilitate meaning in life. Based on this approach several guidelines are formulated for a professional ethic. The proposed guidelines for a Christian ethic are applied to the Christian in the workplace.
