Abstract

Self-empowerment is a useful concept in the alleviation of absolute poverty in communities. Self-empowerment means that people can accept responsibility for their own situation and become involved in it in a new way. Since human beings are created in the image of God, they are called to be responsible before God. In Africa, this means that the individual must accept responsibility for his/her own future. Examples of positive self-empowerment can be found in the “Helpmekaar” movement and in the actions of the Rehauhetswe congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in Africa.
Writing a new story of self-empowerment is possible in Jesus Christ the Lord, and the church should take responsibility for empowering its members in this way.
