Abstract

This article analyses the shift in morality in the termination of pregnancy. It is quite evident that the South African abortion law of 1975 protected unborn life. In the 1996 legislation the protection of unborn life is subjected to the individual choice of the mother. One can refer to this situation as the democratising of morals. Whereas a Christian ethics will advocate the protection of unborn life, the latest legislation on abortion promotes the individual choice as norm for the situation. What is also alarming is that the current abortion legislation doesn’t promote responsibility in ethical decisions, the importance of relations in decision making and the protection of unborn life. Clearly, there is an indication that a Christian ethics cannot have peace with the current morality advocated by the abortion legislation.
