Abstract
This article discusses a framework for scholarship. This framework is sparked by the question: What is good research? The framework is articulated and reviewed from a philosophical perspective. In this article it is argued that the core of university assignments is of an academic nature. Scholarly work should be based on the creation of new knowledge and how this knowledge can benefit a community. The author argues that each academic has a personal commitment to this although scientists belong to a scholarly community. Fundamental in all scholarly work is the quest for the improvement of human life, the environment and the benefit social communities can gain from new knowledge. The article promotes self-evaluation as fundamental to scholarly work. The author concludes with the role that academic citizenship, as a community of practice, can play to support the sustainability of scholarship. The continuous renewal and understanding of scholarship is framed in the context of higher education developments and change.
