AUTHOR GUIDELINES
JoHETI is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open-access journal committed to examining the dynamic intersections of the humanities, technology, and educational innovation. We invite original, high-quality scholarly contributions that critically analyse the role of technology in education, the digital transformation of the humanities, and innovations that influence teaching, learning, and knowledge production.
To ensure a seamless editorial and peer-review process, prospective authors must adhere to the guidelines delineated below. All submissions undergo a rigorous review and must conform to the journal’s scope and ethical publishing standards.
Submission Process and Manuscript Preparation
All manuscripts must be submitted through JoHETI’s online submission system. Submissions via email are not accepted. Upon submission, authors will receive an acknowledgment confirming receipt. Manuscripts that do not conform to the journal’s scope or fail to meet formatting requirements will be returned without review. Authors should prepare their manuscripts in Microsoft Word (.docx format) using Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point font, single-spaced, with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins on all sides. The total word count should be between 5000 and 8000 words, inclusive of references and appendices. Opinion pieces and book reviews may range from 2000 words and above. The title of the manuscript should be in bold and in title case (e.g., The Future of AI in Higher Education). Subheadings should be formatted in sentence case and should not be numbered or underlined.
Structure of Manuscripts
To maintain a coherent flow and facilitate peer review, all manuscripts should adhere to a structured format:
- Title Page: The title page must be submitted separately and should include the manuscript title, the names and affiliations of all authors, their ORCID iDs (mandatory), and the corresponding author’s email address. Funding sources, acknowledgments, and conflict of interest statements should also be included on this page.
- Abstract and Keywords: Manuscripts must include an abstract of 150-250 words summarising the research objectives, methodology, key findings, and significance. The abstract should be followed by 4-6 keywords that capture the essence of the study.
- Main Body:
- Introduction: Clearly define the research problem, objectives, and significance of the study. The introduction should provide a brief literature review and contextualise the research within the field.
- Theoretical or Conceptual Framework (if applicable): Discuss the key theories, models, or conceptual frameworks underpinning the research.
- Methodology: Provide a clear description of the research pardigm, approach, design, data collection methods, and analytical approach among others. If AI tools were used, authors must disclose the name, version, creator, date of use, and purpose of the AI tool.
- Results and Discussion: Present research findings in a structured manner, supported by appropriate data, tables, and figures. Discuss the implications of the findings in relation to existing literature and future research directions.
- Conclusion: Summarise the key takeaways, limitations, and recommendations for further studies.
- References: JoHETI follows the APA (7th edition) referencing style. All in-text citations must be listed in the reference section, and all references must be cited in the manuscript.
Tables, figures, and images should be integrated within the text at relevant points, rather than being placed at the end of the document. Tables should have headings above them, while figures should have captions below them. All images should be high-resolution and readable.
Ethical Considerations
JoHETI upholds strict ethical standards and has a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. Submissions will be screened using Turnitin before being processed for review. Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 10% will be returned for revision or rejected. Authors must ensure that all work is original and properly cited. For studies involving human participants, authors are required to include a statement confirming ethical approval from a recognised ethics committee. Informed consent must be obtained from all participants, and anonymity should be preserved where necessary.
If AI tools are utilised in data analysis, literature synthesis, or manuscript drafting, authors must transparently declare how and why these tools were employed. AI-generated content cannot replace the intellectual contribution of the author(s) and should only serve as an assistive tool.
Conflict of Interest and Funding Declaration
Authors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest and acknowledge all funding sources in a designated section prior to the references.
Peer Review and Editorial Process
JoHETI adheres to a double-blind peer-review process to ensure objectivity and fairness. Upon submission, manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening, followed by external review by at least two independent experts in the field.
The possible editorial decisions include:
- Accept as it is
- Minor revisions required
- Major revisions required
- Revise and resubmit
- Reject
Authors receiving revision requests must submit the revised manuscript within the specified timeframe. In cases of major revisions, the manuscript may undergo a second round of peer review. The final decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief.
Publication Fees and Open Access
JoHETI does not charge any fees for manuscript submission, processing, or publication. There are no Article Processing Charges (APCs), submission fees, or additional costs for colour figures, tables, or supplementary materials. This commitment to fee-free publishing is made possible through the generous support of the Central University of Technology, South Africa, which funds the journal's editorial and production processes. JoHETI promotes equitable access to knowledge and encourages contributions from a diverse range of scholars, including early-career researchers and those from underrepresented or resource-limited academic environments.
Authors retain full copyright of their work under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing for the unrestricted sharing, distribution, and adaptation of published articles, provided appropriate credit is given to the original authors.
Copyright and Licensing
Authors retain unrestricted copyright and full publishing rights for their work published in the Journal of Humanities, Educational Technology, and Innovation (JoHETI), ensuring they maintain complete ownership over their intellectual contributions. The journal operates under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which grants broad permissions for the unrestricted sharing, distribution, reproduction, and adaptation of published content, provided that proper attribution is given to the original authors. This licensing model promotes open-access dissemination, enabling scholars, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to freely access and utilise research published in JoHETI without financial or legal barriers. Authors are encouraged to self-archive their published articles in institutional repositories, personal academic profiles, or public research platforms such as ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and university repositories to further enhance visibility and impact.
Data Avalability
Authors are encouraged to make their research data publicly available by depositing datasets in open-access repositories to enhance transparency, reproducibility, and scholarly collaboration. Providing access to research data allows other researchers to verify findings, build upon existing work, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge within the fields of humanities, educational technology, and innovation. Authors should include clear references to their datasets within the manuscript, specifying the repository name and providing a direct link where possible. If data sharing is not feasible due to ethical, legal, confidentiality, or proprietary constraints, authors must provide a valid justification within the manuscript, explaining the reasons for restricted access. In such cases, authors should outline alternative ways for interested scholars to request relevant data while ensuring compliance with institutional and ethical guidelines.
